COM151 Week 7 - Case Study 1 Stephanie Burdett All Sections No unread replies. No replies. Welcome to Week 7 Case Study 1. Case Study 1 This week's tutorial focuses on developing the analysis skills required for the Critical Analysis assessment. We will be working through an example article, providing step-by-step analysis and reflection, and identifying key issues related to critical analysis. We will also explore each of the required headings so that you can see an example of how to do the Critical Analysis assignment in this unit. There is a template provided which you will use for your own Critical Analysis, and we will apply that template to the article we are analysing. We suggest you print the article that you want to write your Critical Analysis on, and as we go through each of the 10 sections, make notes on each as it applies to your chosen article. It’s a good idea to look your chosen article up in the Library catalogue too, so that you can see which database you would access it from and take down the electronic retrieval details in preparation for your Reference List for the Critical Analysis. Assessment 2: Critical Analysis (Prescribed Format, see Week 7) Students are asked to use the prescribed assessment format discussed and outlined in Week 7. Please make sure you study the format carefully and use each heading to analyse specific elements within your critical analysis. NOTE: Please remember, this is NOT an ESSAY on the chosen topic!! We do not ask you to be an expert on the topic or discuss or argue the topic in your chosen research article. Instead, we ask you to CRITICALLY ANALYSE the article, looking at the context of the paper, the writing style of the author and suitability for the intended audience, how the author structured the paper, how the author develops an argument etc. The aim of this exercise is to understand how the author presented the paper. Prescribed Critical Analysis Format (please have a look at Week 7 for more detail): Title - the title of the chosen article Topic - what is the chosen article about? Context - what discipline, field of research, timeline, debate etc. can the article be placed in? Structure - what structure was used (use jargon here to describe what kind of paper this is)? Style - what writing style did the author use and who is the intended target audience? Argument - what are the main arguments the author makes, what sub- arguments etc? Evidence - what type of research is presented? what data is provided? what kind of resources are used to develop the argument? Evaluation - This is where you evaluate the paper, bringing together everything that you found in context - structure - style - argument - evidence. Conclusion - The conclusion summarizes your findings, but it DOES NOT DISCUSS OR INTRODUCE NEW INFORMATION (no citations in conclusion) Reference List - papers you used for this Critical Analysis should only include the original article reference and two articles taken from the reference list that you chose for this critical review Tutorial Tasks Make sure you complete the tutorial tasks and upload your replies to the Discussion Board. NOTE: Assessment 2 Critical Analysis is due Monday Week 9 at 9am. You can submit a DRAFT for your use only (to check your text matching/correct assignment). Tutors will NOT read drafts. Please use the Discussions for any questions about the assessment. Kind regards, Melissa & Stephanie
